
The digital transformation of higher education is entering a new phase. Starting next academic year, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU) will introduce Beyond Campus, a hybrid learning pathway within its Bachelor’s programme in International Creative Business. Students will be able to complete most of their studies from a location of their choice while maintaining strong connections with lecturers and fellow students through a combination of digital learning and regular in-person sessions.
The initiative reflects a broader shift in higher education, where universities are increasingly adopting flexible, technology-enabled learning models that combine the benefits of online education with the value of face-to-face interaction.
According to the latest EDUCAUSE Horizon Report and the OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026, higher education is moving beyond emergency remote teaching towards the structural adoption of artificial intelligence, personalised learning and hybrid education. AI is increasingly viewed not as a replacement for lecturers, but as a tool that helps create more adaptive, student-centred learning experiences.
A fully integrated hybrid learning model
Beyond Campus is not an online-only degree programme. Students follow the same curriculum and achieve the same learning outcomes as those enrolled in the traditional full-time programme.
Each ten-week study block begins with a three-day bootcamp on the Utrecht campus, where students collaborate on projects, participate in peer feedback sessions and develop professional skills. The remainder of the block is delivered primarily online through structured live sessions, digital collaboration and continuous academic support.
The university says the predictable structure gives students greater control over how and where they study. This makes it easier to combine higher education with entrepreneurship, elite sports, caregiving responsibilities or temporary stays abroad. The pathway is also designed for students who perform better in quieter learning environments than on a busy campus.
AI supports educational design
A key element of Beyond Campus is its foundation in research into AI-supported educational design, hybrid pedagogy and the university’s research-and-development approach, which closely integrates educational innovation with applied research. According to HU, Beyond Campus is not a pilot project or a legacy of the pandemic, but a carefully developed educational concept that builds on existing blended-learning initiatives while incorporating new insights into digital pedagogy and student support.
This approach mirrors broader international developments. Recent research suggests that AI delivers the greatest value when it assists educators in designing learning activities, providing personalised feedback and adapting educational pathways to individual students. At the same time, studies consistently show that human interaction remains essential for motivation, collaboration and academic success.
The future of higher education is hybrid
Researchers increasingly view hybrid education as a permanent feature of higher education rather than a temporary solution. Modern learning environments combine digital and physical teaching to provide students with greater flexibility without compromising educational quality. Successful implementation, however, depends on robust digital infrastructure, well-designed learning experiences and strong academic guidance.
With Beyond Campus, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences aims to demonstrate that technology should enhance education rather than dominate it. By combining AI-supported educational design, digital collaboration and on-campus bootcamps, the university seeks to offer students greater flexibility while preserving the sense of community that remains central to higher education.
