SATIM Monitoring Satelitarny, a deep-tech company based in Kraków, says its automated radar-image analysis software has entered operational testing inside SPOCK-1. That is the German armed forces' dedicated satellite reconnaissance programme, and Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions (RISS) is building it under a contract worth about €1.7bn. SATIM and Rheinmetall announced the milestone jointly from Düsseldorf and Kraków on 2 November.
The deal is small in money terms. It matters because of who got the work. Germany's most sensitive new space-intelligence pipeline now runs analysis software from a Polish company with fewer than 50 staff, not from a defence prime or a US cloud provider. At a time when European governments talk constantly about "sovereign" defence technology, this is a concrete case of cross-border procurement inside the EU.
What has actually happened
According to SATIM's statement, the pipeline it supplied to Rheinmetall has "entered operational testing phase, supporting the German Armed Forces' analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery". The milestone follows the Bundeswehr getting direct access to dedicated SAR satellites run by RISS. RISS is a Neuss-based joint venture, 60% owned by Rheinmetall and 40% by Finland's ICEYE.
The relationship was formalised in a technology supply agreement in December 2025. Rheinmetall said at the time that SATIM would deliver its technology "as a supplier within the European Union", while Rheinmetall would "operate the system independently in Germany". The trade publication Bundeswehr-Journal (in German, translated) described the deal as a German-Polish cooperation whose core purpose is to support the satellite reconnaissance programme for the German armed forces.
SAR satellites bounce microwave pulses off the ground, so they can image through cloud and at night. That matters over the Baltic, where Germany is stationing its 45th Armoured Brigade in Lithuania. The bottleneck is not collecting images but interpreting them: radar returns look nothing like photographs, and trained analysts are scarce.
The claims, and what is unverified
SATIM's product, OREC, uses separate AI models for vessels, aircraft and ground vehicles. Its own marketing material cites results in "1–2 minutes" and "up to 90%" detection and classification accuracy, tested during the NATO exercises FEX24 and CWIX25. US outlet Tech Times reported higher figures: 95% vessel detection and per-scene inference under two seconds. Neither the Bundeswehr nor Rheinmetall has published independent performance data, and "operational testing" is by definition not yet full service.
The bigger commercial question is scale. SPOCK-1 is due to reach full operational capability in 2027 with roughly 40 microsatellites, according to Tech Times. Whether SATIM's role grows with the constellation, and on what contract value, has not been disclosed. Rheinmetall controls the integration and operation, which leaves the Polish supplier dependent on a single prime.
Why it matters
European defence-tech funding has surged. On Monday alone, German-British Hypersonica raised €100m. Yet most start-ups still struggle to reach real procurement programmes. SATIM's route was to sell to the integrator, not the ministry, and to stay in the EU supply chain. Other defence-AI founders may copy that approach. The next test is whether Warsaw, which runs its own SAR ambitions, buys the same software.
